What Parents Can Do to Fight Child Obesity

By: Nick Mutt
Child obesity is one of the alarming situations in most of the countries in the world. Obesity among children can lead to several health problems. So it is always advisable for parents to take action against child obesity before it's too late. You must carefully monitor what your children eat. The aim should be right food, right quantities; junk food to be restricted or chucked out completely.

Fitness trainers say that the number of obese and overweight children coming in for weight reduction programs is on the rise. In this article you will find some useful dietary guidelines to overcome child obesity.

1. Salads are good to replace snacks. Include fruits and vegetables in salad your child love to eat.
2. Fruits and vegetables must be included in diet. Vegetable soups can be served in breakfast.
3. Milk shakes are healthy substitutes for colas. Try not to keep cakes, chocolates and sweets at home.

Encourage your child to take an active part in sports and outdoor games. To lose all the flab accumulated by eating, sleeping and watching TV, your child needs some intensive weight reduction program. If the family members have high BP or diabetes related to obesity, children should be encouraged more so to lose the flab so that those diseases don't bother them. Strict diet of vegetable soup and fruits must be given, and chocolates, soft drinks, etc., to be completely banned.

Lifestyle measures to combat child obesity:

1. Limit time spent in front of the TV
2. Eat healthy food. Try fruit salads and vegetable soups.
3. Baked foods are a better alternative to fried stuff
4. Try sweets cooked in milk rather than oil or ghee
5. Include more pulses and vegetables in your diet
6. Cut out red meat; try seafood
7. Fix regular times for meals
8. Snack on fruits and fruit juices
9. Go outside and play more. Try jogging at least two or three times a week. Cycling is also a good option.

Parents, teachers or fitness experts can only guide the kids but the initiative and motivation should come from kids. What they need is correct guidance and ideal role models. Parents and teachers should play these roles and the results will be excellent, for everybody to see.

A Bariatric Surgery Support Group is There Every Step of the Way

By: Cheryl Forbes
The main reason why people choose to go through Bariatric surgery is because of obesity. Surgery is usually the last resort people would take and the fact that they are now seriously considering surgery means that they have already explored other weight loss options such as exercise, diet and others. Doctors would also advise to take other options first before introducing bariatric surgery. What basically happens is a surgical band is placed around the gastrointestinal tract to reduce food intake. The urge to eat is lessened and one will no longer feel any hunger pangs.

Like any other surgeries, bariatric surgery patients need a support group. Family and friends should automatically support the patient. But there are other bariatric surgery support groups that the patient can turn to. It can even go as far as being part of a buddy system when one monitors the "buddy's" food intake. These are just steps to ensure that the road to being healthy and thin is a successful one.

There will always be success stories and there will always be unsuccessful ones. There are instances when the person who underwent through the operation went back to overeating. What accompanies the surgery is the discipline that one needs in order for it to be successful. There will be a complete turn-around with the way one eats. If one does not follow the doctor's orders and overeats, the band will be forcefully removed because the small portion of the stomach cannot take the amount of food that one has consumed. This is the hardest part. It is not the surgery itself that is hard but what comes after, the discipline that the surgery needs for the band to stay in place. This is the very reason why support groups exist.***

What's Involved in Weight Loss Surgery?

By: Diana Larson
Losing weight is necessary for people who are obese. There exists a variety of means and ways and for weight loss. Weight loss surgery is one of the popular choices for those obese people. Folks whose body mass index is over 35 and who have health problems caused by their extra weight are recommended for this surgery.

Weight loss surgery sometimes might be the only choice, if there is a health emergency where someone must lower weight immediately. Not surprisingly there are some risks and complications that go along with this type of surgery; however it is very simple and effective.

You need to be cautious following the operation to prevent potential complications. Nevertheless undoubtedly, this surgery is the fastest method of weight loss. You must abide by the counsel of the surgeon to the tee, or else you can regain all the weight after awhile.

To the extent that weight loss surgery is involved, the most crucial thing is that you ought to have complete information regarding all potential surgical choices. You can get all pertinent information from the surgeon regarding the different surgical preferences, the course of action of the chosen procedure, the pros and cons of the surgery and the post operative care that is necessary.

If you choose to proceed with the surgery, you should have no doubts left after conferring with the surgeon. Don't be reluctant to ask the question although it may seem silly to you.

It's not wrong to get an opinion from any other surgeon who is greatly knowledgeable. Get the names and phone numbers of some patients who have had weight loss surgery, so you can gain from their experience, whether it is good or bad.

As well as obtaining information from the doctor and patients, you can also find information about this topic online. One more outstanding resource is the ASBS [American society for bariatric surgery]. Obviously the surgery causes immediate weight loss so there are an assortment of risks and complications concerned.

The solution in this operation is that prior to opting for surgery, the patient must be very well educated concerning the procedure because he is required to sign "informed consent" document.

This is a significant document that must be signed by the patient previous to having the operation. As indicated by this permission, the patient consents to the surgery once understanding the potential complications and risks.

If you have comprehensive information regarding the procedure, you won't have unwelcome worries when you come across the symptoms and signs of the potential post operative difficulties that happen because of the surgery and can call the surgeon the minute you become aware of the symptoms. Therefore there's not anything incorrect in going for weight loss surgery if the physician advises you to have it.***

Is Obesity Affecting Your Family?

By: Pierre William Trudel
Are you part of those that see it, feel it and just move on? You are not alone, the signs are everywhere. The signs of obesity have entered our lives and we refuse to admit it. When you talk to neighbors is obesity part of pool side conversation? Do you say: "Hi Jim, how are all those extra pounds making you feel today?" Chances are you don't, the conversation probably goes more like: "Hi Jim, how are you feeling today?" Jim replies, something like this: "My back is getting better, my wife is still on her meds and the kids are watching TV as usual." Typical conversation in your neck of the woods?

We tend to accept our weight and blame everything around us for the problems it brings to our daily lives. It is part of poolside jargon but it is all about others, not you. If you are slightly overweight, are you just about ready to go to the gym yet? Do your kids participate in any school activities? Is your wife so tired every night that you still bring home pizza or chicken and save her all the work? If you identify with any of these statements above congratulations, you are normal, just like most of us. That's the life we lead today. No matter what I tell you, it isn't going to change. Admit it, it's part of us today. Can we make things better? Can we change, without changing all the things we like? Can we eat quickly without having to bring home restaurant food and still let mom have the night off? Can the kids still watch TV, play on the computer, stay healthy, not be overweight, and not have to exercise?

Can they still be safe in the house while you are at work and not be on the streets getting into gangs? Can you keep that hectic schedule, eat right, not exercise, still be healthy and not overweight? Can your wife, mother of your children, full time housekeeper, full time part of the workforce, tired when she gets home and still enjoy moments of relaxation without being told she needs to lose weight, get her cholesterol under control, watch out for diabetes and join a gym between leaving her job ,taking the kids to practice, cooking supper, getting overtime in to pay the credit cards and stop by her sick mother just after her 60 minute workout?

You know what, the answer is a resounding yes to all of this. It must be yes and we need to find the way for it to be yes. This is real life and it is not going away sometime soon. If you can identify with any of the statements I have made, obesity is already in your house or just waiting at the door. Solutions to all these problems exist if you look hard enough. We all want to be healthy and have the family life we always dreamed of, right?

Ways of Dealing With Stress

By: Ron Harper
There are a multitude of ways of dealing with stress. Some have been borrowed from other cultures and religions. The Hindus have yoga and the Japenese have zen. Both of these methods are excellent ways of relieving stress. Yoga is a method of stretching the muscles of various body parts as well as use of positions to relax various parts of the body. Zen is more of a psychological approach to relaxation. It emphasizes relaxing the body through meditation. It can be very effective at relieving stress, especially if practiced on a daily basis.

Other ways of relieving stress include outdoor walks, various types of breathing exercises, or other forms of physical activity. Some may enjoy listening to music or cooking.

Unfortunately, not all stress relievers are physically safe or healthy. Some people turn to smoking cigarettes (or other substances), alcohol, or drugs. I personally believe that these forms of stress relief should be avoided.

Acupuncture and hypnosis can be tried. Certified professionals should be sought if you want to try one of these methods.

If your own attempts at stress relief fail, do not hesitate to consult your physician. For some, medication is required, at least temporarily. By all means, make sure you do something. Ignoring it will only cost you more mentally and physically in the future.

Natural products can be just as effective and in some cases, more potent, than the man made substances. Some of these also contain a high amount of desirable vitamins and minerals. However, if you're going to use alternative medicine, do your research first. Make sure that you know the ingredients of what you are taking. Some may contain other substances and chemicals which are harmful. You should also be aware of the fact that many natural substances have their own set of side effects and drawbacks. For instance St John's Wart can cause prolonged bleeding times. Always be sure that your physician is aware of any natural or herbal supplements you are using.***

-----------------------------------------------------------
Due to the growing popularity and demand for natural and herbal remedies, the FDA is now trying to begin to regulate these substances as well.
Look around and try different methods of stress relief. Find one that works for you so you can stop stressing.

What Are the Causes of PTSD?

By: Roger I. Rowe
To understand the whole concept of post-traumatic stress disorder, we first must come to grips with the root causes of PTSD, as it is most commonly known. This is a set of symptoms which first began to be recognized as early as the American Civil War, 1860 -1865. Doctors began to note symptoms in veterans on both sides of that conflict that prevented the veterans from reentering civilian life. Some of the symptoms included severe nightmares that usually had to do with sounds and memories of battle. Some veterans experienced what we now know to be panic attacks. Certain things would trigger memories of battle, such as a gunshot or something snapping, like a twig - and it would set off an episode of PTSD. Over the years since the Civil War, the causes of PTSD have been more widely recognized. For example, in World War I, it was noted that veterans returning home from the war in Europe seemed to be changed in a way that was inexplicable to those on the home front. This condition began to be known as shell shock. By the time World War II took place, the military was more than familiar with the causes of PTSD and had begun to work on treatment methods.

Post-traumatic stress disorder is not restricted to soldiers alone, however. Anyone who has experienced an event in their life that has left a deep emotional scar can manifest symptoms of PTSD. For example, a woman who has been raped may experience symptoms; she may have panic attacks when she is around strange men or when she is walking in a dark hallway, if that is similar to where her attack took place. Likewise, people who have been through a major natural disaster may manifest symptoms of PTSD. Earthquake victims, for example, may go into a state of extreme panic when anything shakes their surroundings, whether it is something as benign as a steamroller on a street or a genuine earthquake. Some of the causes of PTSD may also include car accidents or witnessing a violent attack on another person. Doctors have reported that small children who have undergone surgery have also subsequently developed symptoms of PTSD. Similarly, people who have been victims of gunshot wounds may experience symptoms of PTSD.

It should also be noted that not everyone who experiences a major traumatic event will develop symptoms of PTSD. For those who have developed symptoms of PTSD, it is heartening to know that there are new treatments available that will, in most cases, achieve remarkable results and allow the sufferer to return to a semblance of normal life once again. There is hope for those who suffer from this often debilitating disorder - life can be good again and you can feel normal. ***

-------------------------------------------------------------
Take control of your life and conquer the effects of PTSD. Discover the new technologies and innovations that make it easier for you to understand and recognize the symptoms and get rid of their causes in a quick and easy way. Learn more about what the traditional world of psychology DOES NOT want you to know. Roger I. Rowe is a champion of sufferers of PTSD and provides multiple avenues of relief for those whom have yet to find a solution for the effects of PTSD.

The Top Three Ways To Tackle Stress

By: Anna Rushton
Stress is a natural part of life; it's how you deal with it that makes the difference between health and illness, success and failure.

I have been writing and talking about health for over 20 years, and in that time I have seen so many people challenged by the stresses of their everyday lives. In today's challenging economic climate the pressures on all of us have increased a hundred fold and learning how to deal with stress is a vital part of staying healthy, productive and happy. What I want to share with you are the many ways you can begin to tackle the effects that stress is having on your health and happiness. First let me tell you about my simple and effective 3 point plan.

1 ACKNOWLEDGE it. We often ignore stress and pretend everything is ok. We don't want others to know that we are stressed, and in the workplace most employees would rather tell their boss they have taken the day off for a dentist's appointment than admit they are stressed and couldn't face going in. We don't give stress the importance it warrants because we are afraid to face up to it. The first step is acknowledging that you are stressed, and that it is not a weakness but a genuine physical condition that is affecting your health, happiness and relationships - and your performance at work.

2 IDENTIFY the stressors. Once you have acknowledged the stress the immediate next step is to identify just what is the greatest factor that causes you stress. This is about being honest, and doing some self monitoring. Don't judge, just observe your own physical and emotional reactions throughout the day and write them down. It's a log that will help you see exactly what stresses you, for example if you get irritable or a headache after a meeting with your boss then that is an obvious stressor - but what exactly is it that does the damage. Does your boss have unrealistic expectations of your workload? Do they fail to acknowledge the good work you do or are they always criticising you? Knowledge is power, and you need to know where to apply it.

3 ACT on the information you now have. Understanding is the booby prize in stress management. The real prize is in understanding and taking action. There are so many options available to you to handle your stress and taking even the smallest action will begin the process of handling and reducing it.

Just those three actions will make all the difference between being at the effect of your stress, or being in control of it

Stress in the Workplace - How Does Your Body Cope With It?

By: PJ Prins
The lifestyle of the average person has changed dramatically over the last two decades. For most people, there is no such thing as a "leading a simple life", just having a decent job and supporting a family.

Thanks to the ever changing economic climate, the pressure on the average household has been gradually increasing. As these pressures increase, it has a ripple effect: It starts affecting all areas of your life. Unfortunately, it also affects your employer, who now expects more from you in order to make his ends meet. This means more pressure, and with everybody in the workplace being under pressure, it causes stress.

The effects of this can be quite dramatic. Besides the "normal" symptoms such as moodiness, insomnia, fatigue, etc., it has been linked (through research) to a number of different diseases and conditions. Stress in itself can cause various malfunctions inside your body, some of which can be complex, and costly. Stress wears the body down. Given any period of time, your immune system will become run down, causing you to be more susceptible to illness. When this happens, you will be extremely vulnerable, since it can have a direct impact on your income.

The fact that you are stressed also has a negative effect on your working performance. Being constantly tired and not getting enough sleep, your body and mind will simply not be operating at peak capacity, which in turn has the boss up in arms, adding more stress. It becomes a vicious circle, and it can destroy you emotionally unless you do something about it. Even if you learn to live with it, it will still affect those around you.

There are many different schools of thought regarding stress management. Some advocate physical exercise, some advocate meditation, and others simply advocate a change in attitude. Whichever way you choose is up to you, but at least make a choice. If you continue to run your body down, what will be left of it by the time you retire?

You may already have done more damage to your body than you realize. Take control of your life, and regain the quality of your life.***
